Moussaka is a popular dish in Greece, especially in Crete. It is also one of the main dishes of traditional Cretan cuisine. Although Moussaka is a dish of Cretan origin, it is actually a traditional dish that is loved and preferred all over Greece, including the Greek Islands. It is in the menus of many restaurants and taverns and also frequently preferred by tourists.
In fact, there is a traditional dish has the same name and made with eggplant and meat in Turkish cuisine. However, their cooking and appearance and of course tastes are different.
Here is the detailed recipe for this delicious traditional Greek dish, Moussaka…
Moussaka Recipe: Ingredients:
- 1 kg of ground beef
- 1 kilo of potatoes
- 1.5 kilos of eggplant or zucchini
- Butter (optional) – 1 tablespoon
- 1 cup of grated graviera cheese or cheddar cheese
- 1 onion
- 4 large tomatoes
- Olive oil
- Salt, Pepper, Cumin, Cinnamon, Breadcrumbs
- Bechamel sauce
How It’s Made.
Put ground meat, onions and olive oil in a deep braiser and put it onto the furnace. After the onions change color, reduce the heat. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, pepper, cinnamon (you can add these in different amounts according to your taste, but it should be considered the amount of the cinnamon), and the cumin to the braiser. The mixture is stirred at low heat until it drained. When the water is drained, take it from the furnace. Add one-third of the cheese and 3-4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs and mix them.
Finely chopped potatoes and eggplants are fried with olive oil. They are dried with a towel napkin.
Placing the ingredients on the tray
Take a large tray, put butter on the face of the tray and dry breadcrumbs. At the bottom, place finely chopped potatoes in the first layer. Sprinkle one-third of the grated cheese on the potatoes. The ground beef mixture is then poured onto the potatoes. Place finely chopped eggplants on top of the ground beef as a layer. Pour the bechamel sauce on top and pour the remaining cheese and breadcrumbs. Optionally, on the top melted butter is poured. Put into the oven the prepared tray and cook it at 180 degrees for 1 hour. After waiting for 20 minutes to cool down and served as a pie.
This moussaka recipe is mostly based on the Chania region of Crete. In other regions, zucchini can be used instead of eggplant. Sometimes the Moussaka in Crete is made with two layers of potatoes and no zucchini or eggplant is added. In our opinion, the essential ingredient of Moussaka is eggplant. But you can use eggplant, potatoes, and zucchini up to your preference and taste when you make Moussaka.
